Forum chairwoman storms out in 'censorship' row

A SANDHURST Labour councillor stormed out of a meeting to decide the town's future, leaving two years of her hard work in tatters.
Cllr Sylvia Trevis took over the running of Sandhurst Forum for the Future - a 20-year vision for the town - in 2003.
Since then she has chatted to a number of groups around the town to find out how Sandhurst residents want to see the area evolve.
Prior to Tuesday night's meeting of committee chairmen, both Cllr Trevis and Lib Dem councillor Ray Earwicker had lambasted the council for its lack of action.
But when Cllr Trevis was told that some of her findings criticised the council and so her notes could not be circulated, she walked out. She said an example of the criticism was that some community groups did not get council grants.
Cllr Trevis said: "I have resigned as chairman. They do not need me to be their pariah. The notes were a record of what the groups told me needed changing, but they saw it differently because it was seen to be critical of the council.
"They said it was not personal but I have put in all the work. I am just so disappointed."
Town mayor Cllr Elizabeth North said many of the ideas flagged up by the document were already in place or were coming soon, such as better links to leisure spots outside Sandhurst, and that more suggestions will be looked at soon.
But she was unaware that Cllr Trevis had resigned as chairman. She said: "It is brilliant that everyone has got behind this and helped produce this document and we are grateful to everyone involved, especially Sylvia.
"She left the meeting but I was not aware that was her resignation. We will have to sit down and discuss the situation with her."
Cllr Earwicker said: "The Tories were not interested in many of the proposals that had emerged from the forum discussions, such as the need for improved public services and better community links. If the plan did fail, the people of Sandhurst would know who to blame."
