Getting ready for Sandhurst Freedom march

The Mayors of Sandhurst and Bracknell Forest visited the Royal Military Academy on Friday (June 23) as part of preparation for the Freedom of the Borough March.

The Military Academy will be marching through Sandhurst on July 15 - the first time it has exercised this right since being granted the Freedom of the Borough nine years ago.

To mark this event, Sandhurst Town Council will be holding a free fun day on the Memorial Park to make sure everyone enjoys the day.

The Mayor of Sandhurst, Cllr Mrs Elizabeth North, and the Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest, Cllr Clifton Thompson, joined Major General Peter Pearson RGR to launch the preparations for the march.

During their visit they were invited to watch the International Pace Sticking competition, which was taking place at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy that day.

Cllr Mrs North, the Mayor of Sandhurst, said: "We already have close links with the Royal Military Academy and the Freedom of the Borough March will celebrate this relationship with the local community.

"The fun day which we have organised around the March has something for everyone and we urge everyone to come along and take part in the celebrations."

Bracknell Forest Mayor Cllr Clifton Thompson, added: "We had an enjoyable afternoon watching the pace sticking competition and it seemed a fitting way to launch the Freedom of the Borough March and fun day event.

"We are proud to have the Military Academy in our borough and are delighted it is taking part in this community event."

"The Academy is very much looking forward to exercising its 'Right to March' and hopes in this way to build on the excellent community links we currently enjoy," added Gen Pearson.

The Freedom of the Borough March will start at the Academy at 1.30pm on July 15 and will arrive at the Memorial Recreation Ground in Sandhurst at 2pm.

However, there will be activities and entertainment throughout the day beginning at 11am, with 20/20 cricket, It's a Knock Out, marching bands, five-a-side football, a tea dance, battle of the bands, a barn dance, a fun fair and much more.

The grand finale to the evening will be a dramatic fireworks display for the whole area to enjoy.

Sandhurst and Yateley Methodist Church Centenary Celebration Concert

Saturday 24th June 2006 - 7.30pm

In her book A Winding Lane in the Wilderness, Libby quoted from a newspaper account of a procession through Sandhurst led by a brass band to mark the laying of the foundation stone of the first brick-built Wesleyan chapel here in May 1867.

And now, in the centenary year of the present church, a brass band will once again help to mark a significant occasion in the history of Methodism in Sandhurst. Charles Church Camberley Band will present a concert on Saturday June 24th at 7.30pm in the church; this event is organised by the Scotland Hill House Group as their contribution to the fund-raising effort.

The band will play a wide variety of music and it promises to be a really enjoyable evening. It would be great to fill the church, so please enter the date in your diaries as soon as possible, and encourage your friends to come too. Tickets (available from Rosemary Gregory 01252 860939) are reasonably priced at £5 (£3 concessions), and this includes light refreshments during the interval.
