Neighbourhood policing report from Sandhurst PC Gary Campion

After consultation through the local Sandhurst neighbourhood forums - held towards the end of last year - residents have set out their priorities for the coming 12 months.

The number one problem identified by residents of Sandhurst and Crowthorne is speeding.

In direct response to this, PC Gary Campion, Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (NSO) for Sandhurst and PC Amanda Price, NSO for Owlsmoor and College Town, along with other officers based at Crowthorne police station, have just received full training in the use of Laser Speed Detection and are working in partnership with the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership.

Over the coming months we will be carrying out regular speed checks throughout the area. These will be targeted at known problem roads at all times of the day.

We would ask local residents not only to be careful that they keep to the speed limits and report roads that are causing concern, but also to leave details of any roads or vehicles which they believe are a particular problem at the Sandhurst police point.

This will be an ongoing operation over the year between neighbourhood officers and Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership, working with local residents to make the Sandhurst and Crowthorne Roads safer.

I would like to reassure residents that while your local police officers are tackling the problem of speeding, we will be working equally hard targeting known criminals and reducing crime in our communities.

I and my colleagues in the Sandhurst, Owlsmoor and Crowthorne neighbourhood police team can be contacted on 0845 8 505 505.

Neighbourhood policing report from Crowthorne PCSO Ivana Houska

For the summer holidays I am planning a multi-agency youth activity programme involving Hope 08, (local Crowthorne churches), the Oakwood Centre, Wellington College, Bracknell Youth Services, Wokingham Youth Services, Edgbarrow School, Crowthorne Parish, the Fire Service and the Rotary Club.

Bracknell Extended Services (Bracknell Forest Borough Council) is donating £2,000 towards funding the programme. This series of events will be targeting pupils at Edgbarrow School and other teenagers in the Crowthorne area. The aim is to get as many young people as possible to do a range of different activities during the main five weeks of the summer holidays (from Monday 28 July to Friday 29 August). This should help to prevent anti-social behaviour over the long summer break and give young people something constructive to spend their time and energy on.

Some of the events which will be taking place are mountain bike riding, swimming, mountain boarding, camping, orienteering, bowling, raft building at Horseshoe Lakes, film nights and many more.

This is very much a community-spirited event where many different people from all types of organisations in Crowthorne are helping to put the programme together. This project supports the work being done by the Crowthorne Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG), which consists of local people tackling quality of life issues in the community.

Students at Edgbarrow School have yet to give the project a name but are in the process of doing so. It is hoped that this youth activity programme will become a regular event in years to come. Details will be publicised in the early part of the summer as to how to take part.

Although it may seem a long time ahead, I have already started organising the events. I’m keen to hear from anyone who would like to contribute, for example by offering a suitable activity as part of the programme, ideally at reduced rates so that as many youngsters as possible can afford to join in.

If you would like to help, I can be contacted on 0845 8 505 505.

Neighbourhood policing report from Crowthorne PCSO Katherine Bullen

I and my colleagues in the Sandhurst and Crowthorne neighbourhood policing team have been developing closer links with local schools in recent weeks.

We have arranged with Sandhurst Senior School that one member of the team – either a police officer or police community support officer – will visit the school at lunchtime every Wednesday. The idea is that we will go to the canteen to meet students and chat with them informally, but there will also be a room available should anyone wish to speak to us in private. The initiative started yesterday (9/1) with a visit by PC Amanda Price and PCSO Rebecca Swann. I will be at the school next Wednesday (16/1) and we will continue the weekly visits on a rota during term time.

Also at Sandhurst Senior School, Rebecca and I have been going along to The Spot, an after-school club held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for children from the Nepalese community, whose parents are either currently, or were formerly, based at the Royal Military Academy. We play table tennis with the pupils and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

To establish contact with younger children in our area, we have made arrangements to join them for school dinner. I enjoyed a tasty lunch with the children at Owlsmoor School today (10/1), and we also visited St Michael’s School and College Town School at the end of last term.

The children crowd round and ask lots of questions; it’s an excellent opportunity to get to know them and explain what the police do. By making ourselves more familiar and accessible to the youngsters, we hope they will feel able to tell us about any concerns they may have. The visits also give us the chance to get across crime prevention and personal safety messages in an informal setting.
