Dis:Course @ The Ark

The Ark has developed a new area of work; the Dis:Course project. An umbrella / support project for small community and voluntary groups in the Bracknell area concerned with disability and surrounding issues and concerns. It will also provide disabled people and these identified groups with a cohesive voice and communication channel. It will also help disabled people find activities and services provided by the sector.

This project was developed as there is clearly a need; Bracknell Forest Voluntary Action received a large funding cut in April 2006 which has effected its capacity to provide ‘hands on’ support for small groups such as minute taking and funding advice, also disability was an area ignored in the Government’s ‘Change-Up’ funding. The Ark, as an established disability organisation in Bracknell, is often approached by groups and individuals and has been assisting them informally. It was decided that the charity would expand its charitable objects to enable more resources to be legitimately diverted to this area of work.

Get involved in the Crowthorne Carnival

There’s still time to take part!

The Crowthorne Carnival committee are working hard to make the 2008 event better than ever, and it’s not too late to get involved.

A full programme of entertainment has been arranged for the main stage during the fete on Saturday 5th July, including performances from several local groups. However, there is still time to register to take part in the procession or to book a stall for the fete. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a local business, school, charity, other organisation, or even an individual – if you’d like to take part, the Committee would be delighted to hear from you.

If you’d like to be a part of the procession but need some help putting your ideas into practice, Bracknell Forest Borough Council's Arts Development department will be working with young people in Crowthorne on a range of activities leading up to the procession. For further details of these projects please contact Kerry Lemon, Assistant Arts Development Officer, on 01344 351756 or kerry.lemon@bracknell-forest.gov.uk

Although the Committee works hard to make the Carnival week come together, a lot of work planning and running events is done by other groups and individuals in the village. For example, the flower festival, front garden competition, and Wine & Wisdom quiz are all organised by local residents and organisations. For further information about the front garden competition, contact John or Maureen Myers on 01344 772325.

If you’d like to hold a sports event, a dance, a concert, run a competition or organise anything other type of activity, let us know! If groups already have an event planned for a date in Carnival week and would like help publicising it, we would be happy to include the details in the Carnival programme, which is delivered free of charge to every house in Crowthorne.

The theme for the 2008 Carnival is “Fun & Fantasy”. The Carnival will start with the procession and fete on Saturday 5 July 2008, and will run until Sunday 13 July 2008 with various event throughout the week. More information and application forms are available from the website: www.crowthornecarnival.co.uk.
