Talented young people from Crowthorne are urgently needed to make sure the upcoming carnival is the most spectacular ever and the coveted best float trophy isn’t won by another community group.
The bi-annual Crowthorne carnival returns on Saturday, July 3, and after the success of 2008, when teenagers and young people from the area won their category in the float awards, the challenge is now on for youngsters to say how they’d like to make the carnival procession better than before as part of the SOS project.
Bracknell Forest Council’s arts development team urgently need people aged 11 to 17 who live, work or study in Crowthorne area to take part in the carnival preparations – the project has no agenda or set theme so young people are free to be as artistic as they like.
Lynne Dick, arts and heritage officer, said: "If you enjoy being creative in art, dance or music then this is the project for you.
"The arts development team is pulling together creative sessions in the run up to the carnival, including sculpture, painting, music, DJing, VJing, dance, costume design and face-painting, leading to the procession of a carnival float. However, that’s as far as our involvement goes – we want young people to have control over the float’s progress and enjoy taking part in it."
The Crowthorne arts project organised by Bracknell Forest Council, led by professional arts company Street Processions and is fully funded so it’s completely free for young people to take part and try their hand at something new like DJing or costume design.
Cllr Iain McCracken, Crowthorne executive member for leisure, said: "All the greatest DJs, fashion designers and artists had to start somewhere and Crowthorne carnival could be the place where the next Stella McCartney or Matthew Williamson cuts their first cloth or where the next Chris Moyles gets their first taste of DJing.
"If you’re aged 11 to 17 and live, work or study in the Crowthorne area why not take part – it’s all free and you could discover a hidden talent. There’s no agenda so you’re free to be as creative as you like – but we desperately need more talented people to take part to ensure another float procession success."
